Recently purchased '92 RT/TT has 5 speed transmission failure. Problem was diagnosed by local Mitsu dealer as bad center 'Viscous Coupling Unit' (VCU) after the Mitsu dealer replaced the clutch and flywheel thinking the slippage was from the clutch. Car will move for a few seconds slowly in 1st and reverse gears until warm, and then nothing but slippage, and low toned whirling sound. I would appreciate feedback from anyone with a similar transmission experience. Does this behavior appear to be a VCU problem or are there other possibilities? Anyone near Clinton with experience with transmissions? Tx,,,

Yep, definately sounds like a fried VCU, but it might also be a stripped output shaft. It's common for this shaft to rust and wear out. This is the shaft between the transmission and the transfer case. Although, one would think the dealer who did the clutch would have noticed this when they removed the tranny.
Good news is, both can be pulled and replaced with the tranny still in the car. I've never done this myself, but read about lots of guys doing it successfully with the 5-speed cars.
The bad new is VCU's are kinda hard to come by. I don't think you can get a new one any more. Best bet is to check the classifieds on 3si and with places like Kormex and Supercar Engineering. They specialize in rebuilding our transmissions.
The dealership probably won't do this for you. They'll want to charge you for a whole new tranny.
