I lead a sheltered life, I weave baskets in my spare time and watch Bevis and Butthead! Come on don't you think a red neck woman would let you kick her ass?(family weddings included) Well Greg good for you now you will be able to sleep better at night knowing you are a man with a plan. Before you know it your last payment will be made and KA-CHING! It will be yours 100%! And remember boys and girls , never tell a girl "you'll kick her ass" It won't get you much of anything on a Friday night! Even with a Stealth there isn't enough car to get you out of that hole! Another life altering situation has presented itself before me again.
Many of you know by now that I'm getting into the plating business. My partner and I have applied for a business loan to build our shop. Unfortunately, my debt ratio (because of this car) is keeping us from getting financing.
No matter how I run the numbers, no matter how much I cut back, I just don't see a way to have my cake and eat it too... I've written and deleted a for sale add probably 5 times now.
I know what I have to do. The car is taking $$ from me and the business will be giving. Seems like a no-brainer, but I just can't bring my self to do it.

My thoughts.
Before you sell the car soley for the purpose of a business adventure,
1. Make SURE that you are 100% confident in your desire to see the business through and stick with it. In other words, if this business idea might just be a passing fancy, then you may want to keep the car instead.
2. Make SURE that you are VERY confident not only in YOUR dedication to the business, but also of your business partner. Is he 100% serious about item #1-above, or are you more of the driving force behind the idea? Selling your car to fund the business when your partner may only be along for the ride for a few months will leave you kicking yourself (and him) in the ass later. Partnerships are tough. I've been there before when I had a computer support business for 2 years as a part-time gig with a friend. It's hard to guarantee absolutes in a partnerships - even with close friends. Think about how much you trust this guy, how dedicated he is, his past history with "seeing things through", your ability to work with him on business decisions, etc. Determine his dedication to the business BEFORE you sell the car.
3. Make SURE that you are willing to risk losing the business AND the car. Businesses aren't alwasy a guarantee when it comes to making money. If you sell the car to get the business off the ground, it might be hard to swallow if the business goes belly up a few months later. Then you're without a car, AND a business. And possibly in more debt too.
4. Make SURE you have a GOOD business plan put together with goals in place. You don't want to flounder around the first few months bouncing back and forth between different avenues. Figure out a gameplan ahead of time before you decide to sell the car. Try to look at realistic figures in regards to revenues and costs. Don't inflate either in an attempt to convince yourself something might be a good idea.
5. Tell yourself ahead of time you won't get what you want for the car. What YOU think it's worth is one thing, trying to find someone who thinks the same thing is another thing. That's NOT a shot at your car, it's the way it is with all cars. You can't put a price on emotional investment that we all put into our cars.
All in all, if you are SERIOUS about the business, and your partner is equally as serious (and equally able to provide the same level of financial backing as you), then I think selling the car is a wise decision. But, there's no gimmies in life so be aware you are taking a risk. A risk that you will lose your car and business won't be successful, but also a risk that you'll lose the car, and business WILL be successful and set you up with a good source of revenue.
HTH and best of luck making the decision. Jesse

Hey Jeff, I sold the escort, and I owe nothing for the laser (non-turbo). It's only worth $1500 at best.
I don't have much in terms of savings from being laid off over a year ago. I don't own any property nor stocks. Just started working full time at Kraft only a year ago so there's hardly any $$ in my 401K. I still plan on working here for benefits and a steady income. This business will be done in my free time on the side. I'll cut back my hours if business does well. My credit is very good, however considering my age (23).
The idea of financing the car thru the business loan came to mind. This would give the benifit of cheeper intrest rates, but then the car wouldn't really be "mine" and could be siezed if things go south with this business.
I have full confidence in my partner in this. That's why I chose to get into this with him. He's giving up a few things to for this. His parents are even giving a portion of their land to build our shop on.
We have a plan laid out and a name picked for our business. The wheels are in moton for this already. You hit the nail on the head though Jesse. I can afford to loose the cost we're putting into this, but it's hard to decide if it's worth loosing the car. I do know that I'm not getting anywhere right now and to succeed, you need to take risks. You don't get far working for someone else.
Guess if this all falls thru, (saying with a very tense voice) I can recoupe my loses and purchase another 3/S (evo's look very tempting too). I think it's worth the risk.
Thanks for the input guys!

Decided to wait till the car is finished getting painted before posting it for sale. Not going to be able to sell it now anyway. Maybe something will come up between now and then.

The problem isn't the cost of driving it, it's the impact the monthly payments make on my debt ratio. I pay almost 1/2 my income a month on this car (trying to get it paid off as quickly as possible), and the banks don't see how I can afford this car and a business.
Hey Jeff, I'll sell ya the car for 17K and buy it back from you a couple months later for 18K. What do you say?
