Shop is just about done, finished building the work benches this weekend, and picked up my new air compressor (thanks for the christmas gift dear) and air tools today. Now, if i could just think of something to use these new toys on.....

Got a chance to use the new toys tonight, and I am not sure how I ever lived without these bad boys. The oil pan is now sitting on my garage floor. That is NOT a fun task with pre-cat eliminators I grabbed all of the rod caps and gave them a good shake, none of them seem to have any play in them. I am still pretty sure the car has a spun bearing, so the block is getting pulled this weekend so I can tear it down.

Chances are the rod won't shake if you have a spun bearing. Gotta pull off the caps and check em out.

Engine is totally apart, pistons have even been removed and are sitting on the work bench. NO bearing issues on anything on the bottom, but I think I know what was making the nasty noise.
Piston 3 and the head have had the shit kicked out of them, found some small metal chunks embedded in the head and I found some more small metal chips in the lower intake runner to that cylinder. So, good news is, no spun bearings, bad news, have to replace a piston and might need new heads.

Yeah, careful not to drop shit into your intake manifold next time. :p
...also make sure your lifters are properly oiled before cranking the motor over for the first time. Pour oil into them, crank the motor by hand, crank the motor with the starter for a while with the cam/crank sensors disconnected, then fire the motor up.

Looks like I found the root of all this evil. During my inspection and cleaning process, I pulled a chunk of metal out of the hot side of my front turbo and the fins of the turbine wheel are all folded over and beat to hell. This piece of metal looks like a weld pool that broke loose from inside the front header. The compressor side of the turbo has lost a small piece of one of the fins, caused by the tubine side bouncing on the metal piece on the other side of the shaft, and that is the chunk of metal I found in the head.
My heads are being fixed, they should be done today. Pistons, rings and wrist pins are on order, and I am working with 3sx to get my front turbo repaired. I am sending my headers and turbo housings out to get ceramic coated and they are going to do a full inspection on them as well. UMG is in May, I will be there, I am hoping the car is too.
WE CAN REBUILD IT, WE HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY.

Well, I couldn't take it any more so we stopped by to visit the wild child in the Batmobile. Boy is it happy to see the light of day -- and man is it dirty.
Johnny's got got quite the set up and a good head start on the rebuild.
Praying it stays nice,
SJ

The rebuild hit a big snag this weekend, the pistons will not fit all the way down in the cylinders, they get hung up on the top ring. I have talked to both 3SX and Ross Pistons for more information about the pistons so I can determine if the issue is with the rings or the pistons. According to Ross the depth of the piston grooves should be as follows:
#1 .119 in. #2 .129 in. oil .143 in.
all of the rings should have a back clearence of .004 in., so the rings should be:
#1 .115 in. #2 .125 in. oil .139 in.
I will measure things tonight I guess and see which one is wrong, I personally think the rings are wrong, but I will not know for sure untill I measure them.

...and the saga continues...
my pistons are now on their way to Arizona to be "fixed." After many conversations with Ross and 3sx it appers that there was a mistake made between Ross and 3sx when they had the 91.5mm pistons made. The ring groove for the top ring was not cut deep enough for the rings. So they are going to correct the top ring groove and send them back to me. I am doubting the car will make it UMG at this point.
