My car's up at the shop and the guy that I had lined up for the tranny just bailed on me.
I need a 5 speed 25 spline AWD tranny to put in place of mine. My output shaft is worn and replacing the utput shaft will be about as expensive as getting a tranny.
Please help.
Thanks
Merwyn

I guess I'm a little confused. Is the transmission shot or is the output shaft?
Because a new output shaft and spool is only a few hundred bucks. Hell, the 300M upgrade is just over 700. I'm not sure where you're gonna find a whole transmission + output shaft for anywhere near that.

I'm not sure where you're gonna find a whole transmission + output shaft for anywhere near that. The transmission is actually fine - apart from the odd shifting trouble into first every once in a while. The output shaft is worn though. I was given a base price estimate of $1200 just to open the tranny and fix the output shaft. If anything else was wrong that would be more expensive. I just felt that for that much I could get a good transmission with a good output shaft to put in. My transfer case was also bad - I found a new one of those to put in. I'm currently trying to get a tranny from shardaerithes (sp?) on 3SI. Hopefully I can get that shipped to me soon. Thanks Merf

Ah crap man. Next time contact Jeff or Maddog about stuff like that. They are way more reasonable with labor charges. Don't get "shafted".

If the transfer case is bad you might want to check into the recall status and check into what may have caused damage to the output shaft. you may want find out what else might be repaired along with it.
I went through this whole routine with the bad transfer case ... I found out about the transfer case problem and recall after I purchased another clutch ($400...didn't fix it ...never got refunded or parts back......I guess they absorbed it for labor)....car wouldn't move...... then purchased an rps flywheel and clutch setup ( matched setup...$1000 bucks). I wanted to make sure I had power to the tranny (didn't fix it).... , another used tranny ($1050). the guy didn't ship on date promised .... wasn't answering phone or ims once he had my cash... playing the dick me game... $200 more in fuel, had to drive to MO to get it... (didn't fix it).... , then finnally a transfer case bought off ebay with 8 miles on it from a recent recall $635 shipped. This all started 2 weeks after I got my car.......I didnt know about the TC problem and recall, so I kept dumping cash ($3235) into it while it sat broke down for the first 6 months that I owned it at a garage 50 miles out of town. I got about a week or 2 out of the used tranny before the drain plug cut loose. The mechanic that was working on it said was stripped when I brought it to him from MO but that he "fixed" it. of course he told me after it was installed.
I got my original tranny back in a couple of boxes becuse they had sent it out to a local college that had a class in transmission repair. The instructor was going to do a rebuild for me as a favor to the mechanic working on it. The transmision was diagnosed with bad vcu, worn output shaft and they were going to do syncros etc. they were just waitng for cash for parts. Well I ran out. After I purchased the tranfer case and had it overnighted it sat for two more weeks. after waiting to hear good news and no call, I called when I asked about how the install was looking. They said they didn't want to install it until the transmission was rebuilt so they could do it all at once. Well I needed to know if the tranny I got from MO was junk or what! The only way to know was to install the TC so I finnally got a trailler and towed it home. 2 days later the TC was in and the car was finnally running... well for a week or two ....drain plug thing......... so now Im back to my original trans. I replaced vcu and output shaft with a 70k one from a stealth and finnaly got to drive the car for almost a year until a rod knock.
I hate having to learn everything the hard way!
check into the recall

Shit Mike!
Yeah, I've heard horror stories like that before. It infuriates me to hear when people get screwed over for nothing like that. Bringing it to a "real" 3/S mechanic like Jeff saves you many, many headaches.
They've seen it all before and can save you months of dicking around.

You do NOT need to replace tranny if output shaft is bad. You simply need to replace output shaft, and possibly input sleeve on T-case if it's also worn.
A shop telling you to replace everything is only looking to make money, not solve your problem.

SJ Yeah that's what I've been trying to say. Not that he needs an even better reputation, but I'd second that sentiment; Jeff works on a car with the amount of care he has for his own. I've sat and watched him take out my transmission to replace the clutch. Absolute class act, and trustworthy. Won't make you replace crap you don't need to.

Wow.. this thread seems to have taken a life of its own. I don't know who Jeff is, but I'll definitely keep him in mind the next time things crop up. By the way, just to set the record straight, I know that the output shaft may have only been the needed. However, the folks that my shop would have used (I think they were using Mits) were charging $200 to open the tranny and then another $800 or so to replace the shaft (if I bought it and gave it to them). I figured that I could get a tranny off 3Si for about that amount with shipping. I'm planning on keeping my current tranny and sending it to Jack in due time to have it completely rebuilt for the next time the tranny dies. My shop was of the opinion that if I could source the parts cheaper than it would cost sending it out, then I should. I was just trying to source parts without sending the tranny for what was not a real rebuild (output shaft repalcement). Thanks for all your help though guys. Test

Yeah the point is that it shouldn't cost anywhere near that to replace an output shaft. But it's in the past, can't go back now.

He's replied in this thread already, see above. Message him next time. Good luck with your transmission, test.
