I've heard that Jeff is the guy to talk to.... Jeff is our man, this is a true statement. But, you really need to get the car to him. Jeff is in Milwaukee. If you can get it towed there, the man is faster than Speed Racer. With that said, you may have luck soliciting others with experience in your neck of the woods. In addition, some would probably come out to help, as we all like these cars and beer. Do you have a garage to work in or what? You're coming to the UMG, right? Most all of us will be there. We can round up the troops and talk about more. I don't think Jeff will be there though, so this is your best way to contact him, unless you call him. SJ

I wonder who told you such a thing... hmm... We need to get your car started up and running one of these days too. Did you go get that battery and tested, yet?

Jessika:
What's going on? Did you take up Aaron's generous offer of trying an ECU swap?
Do tell.
Best,
SJ

Not to butt in, but putting a known good ECU in a car with a suspect ECU is a BAD idea! There are situations in our cars which will cause an ECU to go bad, and if your car has done something to fry your ECU, it will most likely fry your friends ECU as well! Much safer to take the suspect ECU, and put it into the car that had the known good one. If the ECU is bad, the other car won't work just like your car won't, and if the ECU is good, the other car will run fine... best of all you don't risk frying a second till you know for sure that yours is, or is not, fried. There was a guy in chicago that fried 3, it turns out that if there is a short in the IAC, and it returns too much voltage to the ECU in the step count, it will fry the ECU in a matter of minutes or less... trying good ECUs in questionable cars is not worth the risk. But then again, that is just my opinion

Now I'm curious, what sorts of things can cause a car to fry it's ECU??

thanks Ice. I do recall hearing about something like that, but I couldn't remember if it was the ecu or the car that you had to worry about.
Ok, so you want to bring me your ecu?

it was burried in my post, but I know for sure that Damon's car in Chicago had a bad IAC, it it was overloading his ECU and it fried 3 before he knew what it was... THAT one I know for sure, I also understand that other things like bad modules etc can cause fried ECUs as well.
Have you cracked open your ECU yet to look for leaking capacitors? If you open it up and find leaking 'lytics, you will have found your problem right there. The dielectric oil in the electrolytic capacitors (lytics) leaks out of them, and onto the printed circut board (as an added diagnostic tool, the leaking oil kinda smells a bit like fish oil). FYI, the lytics are the things that look like little cans, with two wires coming out the bottom and into the circuit board, although you probably will not be able to see the wires if it is soldered nice and tight to the board.
The leaking dielectric causes the copper on the board, the trace, to corrode, and eventually, it can cause a plethora of issues, which are pretty much not forecastable, because every ECU corrodes a little bit different from every other one. it depends on how bad the leak, etc.
I would recommend cracking open the ECU to give it a "hows your father" in the words of Austin Powers, before you take the time to install it in another car.

My father has a stealth as well and I'm going to borrow his for the day and take it apart. I just remembered that my stealth doesn't have the idle control motor now anyways so we wouldn't be able to switch them now. ahhhhh my car is in shambles... So does anyone care to give me a little instruction on how to do this????

Basically there are two panels on the side of your center console that cover from the parking brake up to the firewall area. There is a screw on each one near the middle of the panel that has a cap hiding the screw head. There are also two plastic push in screws at the very front of the panel near the firewall.
Once you have the screws removed you need to sort of pull down from the corner at the top of the panel and towards the firewall. Once you have the panels removed the ECU is held in by three 10mm bolts. There are two on the driver side, and one on the passenger side. Make sure to disconnect the battery before removing any of the plugs connected to the ECU.

Look for two 10mm bolts directly lined up to each other with little square holes adjacent to them to keep the ecu lined up. With the panels off, you should be able to stick your head under the glove box area and look towards the shifter to see the ECU mounted vertically. Its a goldish looking box, about 1.5in thick, with 3 mounting arms on it. I wish I could snag a picture, would be better than my lame descriptions.. lol
