Well the weather warmed up so yesterday so I pulled the car out of storage and put in new coppers (NGK BCPR6ES, gapped at .040), and new oil Mobil 1, 15W50. (I only put 3K-4K a year on the car so the plugs only have that many miles on them.) When I pulled the plugs all of them were pretty carboned up. Looking at the Plenum both the upper and lower were also pretty black inside. The plugs looked a bit wet but I only fired up the car and moved it a bit so I could work on it so they were probably wet because I didn't let it warm up. It doesn't look like they are oily, just wet with carbon build up. The plugs clean right up with wiping them with a paper towel. Just concerned about the carbon bulid up. From what it looks like I'm running a bit rich. I also get a lot of black crap out of the exhaust. Not any smoke like oil seals, just black drips. (I only run 93 octane also.) When I changed the oil I did notice a drip on the bottom of my tranfer case. Not sure if its from the transfer case or something up above. I thinks its from up above. Here is a link to pictures of my plenum, lower plenum, plugs and tranfer case. Take a look and let me know what you think. http://s145.photobucket.com/albums/r236/BunkVR4/Thanks Kyle I forgot, 93 VR4, no mods, 125K mileage, 60K done last fall by G-ELL, new 99 lifters last fall. The car will probably go on the road in another month or so, so I do have time to work on it. I plan to order a bunch of Caps for my ECU and get that done soon. The Caps are so cheap I will probably by 10 sets of each so if others are looking for the caps I will have them.

These cars run rich when you first start them up. Perfectly normal.

Plenum doesn't look that bad to me, but the Mad Scientist can confirm later. Did you get the recall done on your t-case? (i.e., seals changed out for free?) SJ

Me thinks the plenum looks fine too. Not much different than the plenum on mine with 42k miles.

Bunk wrote: Greg, Look at the pictures, should my plenum inside look like that. the black soot in the plenum comes from the EGR valve dumping exhaust back into the intake to help with emissions, and the oil froth that gets put (sucked) in the intake piping to keep vacuum in the crank case. normal, but if you don't like it, get EGR block off plates, and a catch can. then if you clean the pelnum it will stay pretty clean, or you can set up a water or alcohol sprayer, and it will clean itself over a few thousand miles... good luck.

I did all that (alcohol). In fact, I run two catch cans. SJ

Adam,
Thanks for the info. I was wondering why it would be black inside the intake, DOH, EGR valve. Makes sense now! Like you all know I'm very green when it comes to these cars and seeing black crap like that on the intake side made me wonder what it was from. Thanks for all you help guys!
Kyle

Adam stole my thunder.
If you pull your driverside innercooler & pipes, you will notice a very light coating of oil in those as well from the rear crankvent.
