What is the best way to go about resetting my timing belt? Just take the old belt off, line up the makes on the cams and crank (I assume there is one on te crank) and put a new belt on? Yes, I will replace the water pump and tensioner as well.

As I recall, all of the gears are marked. The tricky part was getting the slack in the timing belt right so that when you tension it all of the gears are still in the right spots. If it can wait until this weekend, I might be able to come over and help out. Do you have the mitsu tensioner tool?

there are arrows on the heads, which line up with dots on the cam gears. that's pretty much it for the top.
the bottom you'll need to pull the acc. pulley off to see the crank mark.
you'll need air tools and a mean nasty impact gun, or a mitsu tool that hooks into the pulley holes (or home made equivalent) and a breaker bar, or rest the breaker bar against the sub frame and turn the starter a click to bust the nut loose on the pulley.
good luck with that.
after that its just time consuming, not really difficult.
also, you may want to forget the tensioner set perfectly, and just put the tensioner pulley on so it's jacked tight. I haven't tried it, nor can I say it's a good way to go, but on 3si with ray pampena it's all the rage right now... for whatever it's worth...

I wouldn't do that because it'll wear out the tensioner much much faster. If you only expect your motor to last 10K (or you just don't care), then by all means, go for it! Ray is an intresting sort of bloak. I'm not so sure about many of the things he does.

I have been working on getting the cam covers off, and I found that the wire that runs to the crank angle sensor must have been rubbing the alternator belt and wore thru the wire. Looks like it isn't a timing belt at all, I counted them again and they all line up.

IF thats all it is thats pretty awesome. I found my front motor mount tried to loose the bolt. That makes two in like 6 months. 9Beasts Pown joo!!!!!

Awesome news John. Now all you have to do is put the "AWD" mod in and your car will start shaping up to be a decent ride

SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET John.
My car tried to eat the crank sensor once. Caught it in time though...

John, btw, what was the POPping sound you guys heard then...?
I did notice a lose hose clamp on your intercooler lines going to the passenger side intercooler, but the line wasn't loose.
might want to check into that.

Quote: John, btw, what was the POPping sound you guys heard then...? My guess is that was backfire, when the crank sensor died the ECU stopped fireing the spark plugs, but the injectors where still spraying before the motor flooded out and died.
