Now, I'm no expert on these cars, but how could pulling/reinstalling the tranny cause the motor to get rod knock? Did they drain your oil and forget to refill it?

You're no expert -- Linus, you reading this? Say it ain't so Joe -- unless it's something else. Only reason to drain it would be to change it... Best, SJ

Or... possibly filled it back up with 10w30 on a car with a bunch of miles on it, and the bearing clearances were too loose, and the oil pressure dropped... I dunno. That's why I run 15w50... best I got.

My point was they shouldn't have done anything to the motor while pulling the tranny.

G-ELL wrote: My point was they shouldn't have done anything to the motor while pulling the tranny. hmmm. I would agree. I know I've had my transmission on the ground without changing the oil, and I replaced the rear main seal... so yes, to answer your quesiton, 71. that's the answer. 71. How long was the car down? any chance it sat so long, the oil got ------ I mean, crappy.? Or, check the oil pan for dents, for if the held the engine up with a jack, or moved it while re-installing the tranny, and the pick up couldn't get oil in because it was partially blocked...? ok, so I had a bit more, but now, seriously, that's all I got.

I've had my trans out of the car more than in it.
When I first started my car up after having sat for over a year, it sounded as if something was knocking or banging on the pass side of the motor. After driving around for 10 mins this sound went away. I take it you do not have a logger of any kind?

i did it myself cause the last time i changed the clutch was when i first got it i had no problem at all with the motor at all. i did all the same things each time. i just dont understand i had a knock like this before but it wasnt as loud and it went away before. i really haven't looked at it cause im kinda afraid to. i did however drain the oil but i did refill it before starting everything got new fluid in it. it was time for oil change anyway. should i try a thicker oil and see if that does anything? this weekend im gonna try and get around to looking at it.and pray that its not the motor but if it is well that just gives me reason to build a stronger one. i just started a third job so i should have the money the dissaoint will be not having my car for the gathering unless i figure out what's wrong with it. o also it feels like it last power to it alot like its not catching or something once it started knocking i didnt wanna move it anymore. i don't if that could mean tranny problem? i have no idea this dam car!

I have no idea what you just said there, but I can tell you that when you leave your motor sitting for a long time, the lifters and rockers will clack for a while until you drive around a bit.
As for the lose of power, the knock sensor will pick up the clacking noises as real knock and retard the timing which will make the car sluggish.
I'd first check your oil level, then drive the car around "spiritively" for a little bit.

I never thought about that, that may have been my problem when I took mine out for the test drive after the turbo install.
