Hey I was asked by a friend out in California to relate his Stealth problem and see if we can come up with a solution. Here Goes!!!!!! 144,XXX , 1992 ES / NA After having the car 2 days .... it started running rough between 45-60 mph ( accelerating and decelerating). That lasted for about 5 days. Then one morning he took it out of the garage and it wouldn't go over 25 mph. It seemed the more he put his foot on the gas the worse it got. Towed it to a shop. Were they : 1) replaced plugs 2) replaced wires 3) replaced fuel filter 4) cleaned the throttle body 5) Installed a new MAS
Now the head mechanic thinks that the timing belt might have jumped a tooth, but the compression is 20lbs across the rpm range , so they think there are no bent valves. The mechanic says the timing belt, Tensioner and H20 pump need to be replaced even if they are not the problem. Next they want to look at the replacing the ECU. I was thinking like a vac leak? or a fuel issue? Input guys!!!!!!!! Tim

double check the wire harness and such for a bad ground. or see if you are getting voltage on your ground wire, I had an issue like that with my Honda.

First things first. Check the timing. Both the cam timing and ignition timing.
Report back.

Thanks gang for the input. Just got back from my Mechanic and this is what transpired. (Forgive me as I'm NOT a mechanic so I'll Paraphrase here)... The took the timing cover off to check the "line-up" and it was off. As they were turning the Cam gear by hand, the Belt slipped 3 teeth! Although it looks as though the Timing belt had been changed at 60K, it needs it again along with the Tensioners and Water Pump. He feels 95% sure that its the Timing. So my options being limited, I told him to "Go For It". At this point it's my only mode of transportation and seeing as how both my wife and I suffered CATASTROPHIC Financial losses earlier this year, we both own our cars and I'm not giving up on this Stealth! Its a beautiful car and I intend to keep/enjoy it! Bottom line is, it'll get fixed soon and that's all I care about. This Dad needs a "Bonding" experience with his car. For only driving it 5 days out of the last 7 weeks, I need my baby back.
I'll keep you all posted.
Roger

-*inserts foot in mouth*- ok, I'm very surprised. It must have slipped more than mine did to cause it to run that poorly. I wouldn't be too sure that you don't have valve damage though.

Pay for a plane ticket, a place to stay, and food and I'll come out there and redo the timing for you.

just a thought... 3 & 6? aren't they on the same ignition coil?
Maybe you have a bad coil. If they are indeed on the same coil, h ave them try switching coils and see if it still misses on 3 & 6.

A ...bad coil, bad PTU (Power Transistor Unit), bad connection in the coil pack... There are tests in the service manual for all of these. I will say this about your mechanic. He's probably playing guessing games. The only thing the CAS does is tell the ECU where the cam is positioned in the cycle. It doesn't control spark to the individual coils. That's done at the PTU.

Another Update... The Mechanic received the wrong Cam Sensor so that put off that venture until tomorrow. He also ordered an O2 Sensor. So I can see where you guys are coming from because it does look like a "guessing game". What you have to understand, is that I have NO previous History on this car whatsoever. The items that were replaced, actually NEEDED replacement. Every sensor that was put on (and didn't make a difference) was taken off and I was not charged for it. With that being said................... So I now have a baseline of what's been done: 1)Wires Changed. 2)Plugs Changed. 3)Fuel Filter changed (and pressure checked at 40-48 psi). 4)Throttle Body Cleaned. 5)MAS Changed(but made no difference). 6)Timing Belt changed. 7)Water Pump Changed. Timing Belt Tensioner changed. 9)Cam Sensor (will be changed). 10)O2 Sensor (will be changed). 11)Ignition coils were tested/swapped (all coils checked out) If 9 & 10 don't work then were going to change out the ECU. This mechanic has been around for 20 years and has repaired 2 of our other cars, saving us a BUNDLE. We live in a somewhat "rural" community with no Dealerships in the immediate area. I'll post more details as they become available. Roger
