Hey,
Today I noticed a "squeaking" sound off and on and noticed it was getting more louder and longer in length's from stopping and going and it continues with the brake on or off. My dad and I narrowed the sound down to the rear passenger side wheel. So we're thinking it has to be the bearings either that or something's just rubbing on the brake maybe the dust shield but it's kind of a whining noise... I know all we can do is talk about it on here but has this happened to anybody else? Maybe you can explain to me the symptoms. My car has 150,xxx miles on it and is a '91 Base Stealth MTX.

Jack the car up, grab the top and bottom of the wheel, and try to "shake" it. That's usually the easist way to tell if the wheel bearing is bad.

Tire doesn't shake at all. when I spin it, it sounds like it's coming from the caliper so maybe a brakepad that needs replacing. I'm not saying that it's rubbing becuase I read that the brake pads are ALWAYS touching the rotor to clean it and to get rid of the water. But maybe it's rubbing too much than it should. So should I tackle it myself or take it in to somebody? I've never touched brakes before just painted the calipers . ~Woody

Could also be the parking break shoes sticking as well.

Well that could be it becuase the drivers side was rubbing and if you touched the center hub on the wheel it was hot. So If it is that how would you adjust it if it happens to be it? or maybe it's just the cable going to it stuck or something.. but if it isn't how would you adjust it?

It's hard to explain without being there to show you, but the parking brake setup is kind of a mini drum brake behind the rotor. There's an adjuster at the bottom where the 2 shoes meet. You have to spin (chances are it's rusted or fused by now) towards you or away to loosen/tighten. I can't remember which way does what at the moment though.

ok, I'll try in the morning just kind of do one thing at a time first i'm gonna see if it's just the cable running to it incase it got bent or something making it unable to loosen. Then if it isn't that then i'll adjust the E-brake just kinda play around with it too see which way does what and stuff ( on account it's not fused together with rust.) But thanks, I'll try that in the morning.
