Should be one timing mark on the cam gear and another behind the cam gear to match the mark up to.
Congrats on the buy, hope you get it running.
Single over head cam, or dual over head cam? What did the guy you bought it from think the problem was..? What's all taken apart?

Thanks...Where abouts behind the gear??..I lookd & didnt see anything
Its a 3.0 I believe
They guy we bought it from was a college student & didnt know anything about cars..He said that he was at a stop light & killd it & it wouldnt restart..My buddy told him it was peob the timming belt & thats what it was..The car has been really beat...This kid didnt take care of it at all..Its scrachd up & VERY sun faded..Also has rust on the driver side rocker pannel & a dent in the drivers side rear qurter & smashd out taillight...
We have it all torn apart to replace the timming belt..Just cant find the timing marks..We are also replacing the water pump while we are at it...Seems to be leaking coolant from there...
We also hope it runs good when we are done Then Ill start on the body work & totaly repaint the car
Once again thanks..

If you look on a DOHC in between the gears there are two metal "arrows" that point at the gears. These arrows need to point to the cam gear tooth with the "dot" on it. I'm not sure where the mark is on a SOHC, but I'd bet it's similar. Yes, It will be a 3.0. They all are. There are single overhead cam 3.0's, Dual overhead cam 3.0's, and dual over head cam turbo 3.0s. The difference will be the number of cam gears for the front and rear cylinder banks, and if the thing has turbos strapped to it or not. pics of my car's recent 60k here. If it looks like this it's a DOHC. http://www.w3si.org/forum/viewtopic.php ... c&start=90If he killed the car by not changing the timing belt you know you will most likely need valve work..? These are interference engines, and when the timing belt goes the valves and pistons do not play well together. I'm assuming you know this because it sounds like you have everything taken apart already. How many miles are on it? the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, and other fun stuff should be changed every 60k. Good link for 60k inserted here, look down the page a ways under repairs and mods. It has info about DOHC and SOHC engines. also a good site to kick around on to learn more about the car. http://www.stealth316.com/1-repair.htmDo you have a repair manual? Also a datalogger, either buying one or finding out who has one around you is not a bad idea. Where are you located?

If you feel too far in over your head with this one, especially if the belt is skipped and the heads need to be rebuilt, I'd be willing to purchase the car from you.

TBO wrote: It is a dual overhead cam 3.0 SOHC... So which is it? Dual Over Head Cam or Single Over Head Cam? On a SOHC motor, if you're looking at the motor straight on (from the drivers side), the marks are on each head and you have to look inbetween the space in the cam sprocket. For the front cam the mark is about in the 11:30 position and for the rear cam it's in about the 1:30 position. The mark for the crank sprocket is on the oil pump case and is about in the 1:00 position. The marks themselves look like diamonds and can be kinda hard to see. There are 2 dots on each cam gear directly on opposite ends and one on the crank. The triangle must point directly at the dot on the sprocket. Does that make sense? I don't have any pics of the marks on a SOHC motor.

Well We found 1 of the 3 magical timing marks..The 1 on the crank is easy to find...The top 2 not so much...We are 1 step from driving over it with the monster truck...If I had the keys for it there today my buddy would have...No joke...Hes that frustrated with it..LOL...I told him to call the dealership on mon & they will tell him....So hes holding out...
G-Ell...No clue what you mean by the 11:30 & 1:30 positions...But no where do we see any marks on the top 2 gears...

Well....We finaly got to work on this POS..Got all the info I needed from an Early Bronco forum Im in...A guy scannd the page I needed out of his manual for me & we were set...By the way...on a SOHC the marks are 1,12& 1
Got the belt on...Hookd the motor mount back up...hookd the battery back up...got in it...turnd the key & it fired up instantly...Suprised us cuz its been sitting since mid winter...We drove it up & down the road..
Now we will tear it back apart & replace the water pump(Didnt want to change it till we knew it would run to save cash)..So far we have with the purches of the car A whopping $325...
