So for all of you that were reading my tranny problem posts, I thought of something that could be causing the problem...
I have 245/40's on the front wheels and 245/45's on the back wheels. Its been that way for about 3000mi. and I'm wondering if that has caused some problems and thats why I'm hearing the noise only when its in gear... I know that because of the size difference the tires are spinning at slightly different speeds and that can't be good (I didn't even think about that when I put them on, and apparently the Mitsubishi mechanic didn't either...).
Anyway, anyone have any input they can give me on this?

The center diff doesn't like the wheels spinning at different speeds. If it's damaged, that can be costly and/or hard to find replacements.

yeah, I just called Renner Mitsubishi and they said the diff is non-serviceable and I would have to replace the entire transmission... could I have it rebuilt yet?

The vcu in the center diff is serviceable but it is easier just to replace. Did you have the recall done yet? The trans should be ok if the front diff in the trans is bad that is replacible also.

There was never a rebuild manual for the trannys which is why dealerships always want to just replace them.
The good news is if it's just the VCU, that can be swapped out with the tranny still in the car. I've heard of guys doing this with the 5-speeds. Donno if it can be done with the 6-speeds.

Pulling it and inspecting it is the only way.

Hey, look here. http://hireznet.com/swap.htmStep by step with pics on how to pull out a 6-speed output shaft. Looks like you can't pull the VCU like with the 5-speeds. Not easily anyway.
