My idle runs smooth when the car is running and nothing is turned on. But as I turn more accessories on like heater blower fan and headlights the idle starts to serge up and down. Would this be the alternator or the voltage regulator??? Seems like the alternator is having trouble keeping up with the demand...

Brian, if you want to swap a different alternator in to try it, I have mine out of the car you could try. However, I would ask you to do everything possible to keep it clean and unscratched, because I spent a good deal of $ on to to get it polished. But, if you want to try it, let me know. You could always swing by my work this week and pick it up. I can bring it Wednesday if you want.

Many auto part stores will test your alternator for free.
Do all your lights get dimmer as the idel lowers and brighten as it raises?

yes the lights get dim while the idle is surging... On the gauge it shows charging all the time.....14 volts to 16 volts...
Thanks for the offer Jesse, but I would probably scratch it up....

Just to clarify... The headlights and dashlights get brighter as the rpms go up?
I recommend getting it checked out at your local auto parts store because if it shows 14+ on your gauge and your lights are dim at the same time, it could be your battery not being able to keep the charge from your alt. They will checlk both at the same time and just takes a couple minutes. I used to do these daily in the wintertime when i worked at one.

it could be your battery not being able to keep the charge from your alt. Throw a different battery in there quick and see what happens. seems like your alternator is working fine.

Thanks for all the help... Now that you guys mention it the battery is going on six years old now, and this is when it would go out.....when the temp is around "0" degrees......
I think I'll give that a try...

It may not be that it's going bad, it may be that it's just not insulated well enough for the extreme cold.
b.t.w. If the alternator is bad, replacing the battery will only cover this up for a short time till it finally dies from the alternator not keeping a good charge.
Alternator tests are free.

Before you buy a new battery, get the system checked out. No sense in spending mod money on unneeded replacement parts.
