Just curious if anyone has any experience/ advice/ thoughts on my upcoming tire purchase. These are going on stock chromies, 245/40 18s. I'm replacing Bridgestone Potenza S03 Pole Positions that are old and cracking.
The tire dude recommended the BFGoodrich Sport Comp 2 as an excellent summer performance tire with unbeatable "bang for buck". After a little research, this appears to be a solid suggestion -- a new offering from BFGoodrich that replaced an older model early last year, they're now the #1 Ultra High Performance Summer tire on TireRack.com. Nearly best-in-class rankings for cornering, traction, and steering and also ride comfort and noise.
His other recommendation was a step up to the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2. This seems to be another solid suggestion, with the Sport PS2s and Super Sports being widely considered the best tire in the class and the benchmark by which other summer performance tires are measured. This tire is actually in the Max Performance Summer category, a step up I guess, and probably technically more similar to the S03 Pole Positions. The grading on TireRack.com for cornering, traction, steering, ride comfort, and noise are all outstanding and a little better than the BFGoodrichs.
That said, the price difference is substantial and tough to swallow considering the (probably) marginal difference. $850+tax for the BFGoodrich, $1500+tax for the Michelins. I guess I probably don't push the car enough or track it / race it to make the extra expense worth it, but then again, what's the point of car enthusiasm if you're not hemorrhaging money to chase that little bit of upgrade?
Any thoughts?
