Anyone have any info about sanding down the first gen vr4 chrome rims? Picked some up that has some bad chrome peeling and wondering how safe it is to just sand it down.
Took it to two different shops, and they are asking $40 and $51 per rim to be sand blasted. Going to take about two-three hours only to be completed. But that's a bit pricey.
How hard will sanding them down be?

I would suggest paying them to do it. $40 a rim isn't bad. Even if you have the perfect tools for the job, short of a sand blaster, it's going to take you many hours and much frustration to do it yourself. I tried sanding down my plenum/valve cover and after 2 hours I sent them out and paid to have them done.
If you do try it yourself, go to Auto Zone and pick up a can of Aircraft Stripper. The stuff is amazing. Spray it on and it will take the chrome layer off in minutes. I used it on my valve cover to get the powdercoating off and it literally just peeled off like an orange peel. Then you're going to need a lot of sand paper. A lot. The worst part is going to be getting in the corners, which you can use a dremel for, but they tend to be hard to get even pressure with and you end up pitting something.
I would really suggest spending the 160 bucks and having someone sand blast them professionally.

I don't think aircraft stripper will remove chrome plating. I don't think sandpaper will be worth a damn either, but it wouldn't hurt to try though. I know a guy that put the wheel on his car (on jackstands) and put it in 2nd gear to sand his wheels. Just make sure you have the exhaust vented from the garage. 120 grit might be a good starting point. If you have a drill, get a flapper wheel for it and save yourself a ton of effort...
good luck!

I dont know where you live, but in Butler there is a place called U-Spray that is a do it yourself sand/bead blasting place. Ive sandblasted there a few times for work and it only took 40-50 minutes to do all four rims and its about buck something a minute to use. I was thinking of doing my chrome rims there and then painting them.

So, I got another problem. The guy at the powder coating place is telling me that if I get my rims sand blasted, and not powder coated also, they will be off balance and never will be balance again??? I'm a bit confused. Anyone want to chime in on this?

lol sounds like he's trying to squeeze out the powder coat out of you too....no wheel is balanced perfectly, that's why auto shops offer that nice little "balancing" service. even then, it's so very close, but no wheel will ever be perfect.

Alright, thanks for the quick reply. That's what I was assuming too. Is it possible to be "SO" off balance that it's just scrap? lol. Just curious. I'll just let him sand blast it for me then.

Now that the chrome is peeling like a Pita. I just want to get it sand blasted. Are you saying sand blasting can cause the rim to bend?

So yes, if it is bent bad it could be scrap.
