So, for those of you that don't know, my car is making a ticking sound with a random clunk from time to time at idle. This is a brand new Mitsu short block.
The car stalled out while driving it on Sat, but started without any problems after that. Then a few seconds later, the engine started to run very rough. Shut it down, pulled over and checked for blown off intake pipe or something. None found. Started car up again, and it sounded fine. Started driving down the road again towards the gas station, car stalled again pulling into the station. Added gas, started car, idle is fine, but now I hear a ticking sound (i have 99 lifters) so now I am just going to take the car home because something isn't right. Pull out of the gas station, all is well thru 1st gear, then engine runs hard and labored once I am in second gear. Nuring the car home for a half-mile, it wants to die at a red light, and takes me burbing the gas to keep it running. Get home, park it.
Sunday rolls around and Jeff comes out the hear it. Had to jump start the car becasue the battery is dead for some reason, and it is worse then Sat. Sounds like it is running on 5 cylinders for a bit, ticking is worse then it was, and a clunking is heard from time to time. The car will idle fine for a bit, then it will idle like crap, then it wil stall out, then it will idle fine. Does this for a bit while Jeff is doing his thing in the engine bay. We shut it down, and the car sits. *sigh*
Jeff gave me a few "action items" to try and a few things to test, but the ticking and clunking has me more then a little worried. More to come on this one I am sure.

REALLY sorry to hear man. Wish I had an easy fix (or pehaps a magic wand for our whole group). What were the "action items" the good Doctor suggested? SJ

Quote: What were the "action items" the good Doctor suggested? Well, he wasn't 100% sure if it was a block issue or not becasue it was doing some many different things, so he would like to try a different ECU, check my coilpack and PTU and maybe even check injectors. Also lift the valve covers off and check for play in the lifters. I called a different Mitsu dealer today to ask if their shortblocks come with a warranty, and I was told 12 months/12K miles. So, we will see what my action items show me.

I'm sure Jeff told you that your car could ruin the other ECU, right? WHAT? You've got to be kidding me... What are you going to do with the car? <sigh> Thank God for SS. This just gets better all the time. What is this, the summer from... Illinois? SJ

SJ for president I did not clarify with John when we were talking yesterday. Thank you Scott for catching that. Think I'm getting old or something - either that or the hand I used to pick up the soldering iron was bothering me more than I thought.... Not the handle of the iron, the actual iron. Anyway, my bad for not being specific. I thought SS had one laying around that maybe John could try in his car, because it was an extra one? Otherwise we can try his in someone's NA car. I think Joe has the same year? Might not lead to anything, but it would be good to at least rule out a potential issue before just tearing the whole thing apart.

I pulled the front bank spark plugs last night, they dont look too bad, I was running a little rich so they are a little dark, but dont seem to be damaged or overly fouled.
I will most likely drain the oil tomorrow and look for junk in it. *crossing fingers*

my random tick was an extra-ordinarily loose t-belt. hope that did not happen to you. may be something to check. pop the front cam cover and see if you can pick up the belt.
Mine sounded like a belt slap. (probably from the t-belt being so loose it was "slapping" the water pump.)
Did you do a compression test?

<--- took battery out of car, and had it tested. BAD BATTERY.
The car now has a brand new Optima red top in it, and the idle is now solid with none of the funny stuff it was doing before. Still has the ticking, but as the car idled it got less and less (lifter tick I am hoping.)
I still feel the ECU is suspect, and I am working on converting the car to run with a 93 TT ECU, and two O2 sensors. I will leave the wideband O2 sensor installed, and use it for tuning the E-Manage.

Awesome! Funny how we were just talking about batteries at the UMG...

Also check the alternator. Last spring when I took out the VR4 it had a brand new battery. It ran fine every day for a week. Then one day I had to drive to Green Bay to fly out on business and it wouldn't start. I jumped it and off I went. Only problem was I couldn't keep it running at idle. I took the car home and grabbed the wife's car. When I got home from the trip I checked it out and it was a bad alternator. I picked up a rebuilt altenator and that was it. So put a volt meter on the battery while running and see if you getting a charge.
See you might have solved the battery problem only to realize it was an alternator problem.
Just my 2 cents.
Kyle
