now I have that problem, starting 2 weeks ago.
what could it be? while I'm on hwy its fine. as soon as I get in city and stand for min or so gauge goes up, not all the way but 3/4 I'd say. I never had that before. and my hose that goes to radiator is really hard and hot. what could it be? thermostat?

Are your fans working? Also make sure your coolant is full. Tstat is possible also, might want to do it if you're not sure, you can pick one up for under $10.

Like TT and Vee say, check the fans, your coolant level and replace the t-stat (since it's dirt cheap). I had the same problem. It was my head gasket.

Mine was doing that at the UMG due to a failed high speed fan.

+4 in favor of non-functional fan.

In a 1g there are 2 thermo switches. Low speed kicks in at 171 degrees, high speed kicks in at 189 degrees. To check for a failed thermo switch, you can either pull it and put in in a pot of water and heat it up while hooked up to an ohm meter. Either that or you can check it in the car. Start the car and let it warm up, and check the wires to see if they're getting ground once it warms up. Do you have a service manual? Otherwise I can give you a link to one. Circuit diagram for the cooling system is page 176 in the electrical manual.

I belive they are on the bottom of the radiator. If you have a volt meter you may want to check to see if you're getting ground. I would doubt the thermo switch. They would both have to have failed to keep the fans from working. First to things to look at would be the fuse and the motor itself.
