Can I cheap out on an intake and still get the performance of a K&N? Any recommendations?

Realistically, how much hp are you gonna gain putting an intake on a VR4?

You don't gain anything at all putting an open element air filter on a VR4 other than cool BOV and intake noises. Several dynos & real world testing have shown no increase in HP or gas mileage.

I think what the Mad Scientist was trying to say, IMHO, is that these kind of mods need the complete picture to be effective Justin:

So, for example, to get the real impact of an FIPK, you also need:

* gutted cats
* performance exhaust
* performance downpipe

That make any sense?

Keep in mind the total amount of air flow you can get is only equal to what the throttle body can handle. Also, unless there is some form of cold air flowing to the FIPK, you're adding hot air to the mix.

well i was planning on doing intake, gutted precats, test pipe and the stock exhaust, would that do anything?

Thanks for this, and it makes similar sense to what I was trying to say above.

However, my seat-of-the-pants dyno told me when I changed over the intake, gutted the cats, added the performance exhaust and downpipe, the car was much happier. And my fuel mileage did in fact increase. But again, it was not just an FIPK that made the difference.

Sounds to me Justin, based on the above, you'd be better sereved to focus on the rest of that list first, and simply get a K&N filter for that stock air box.

There's other factors that play into it.

For one, by eliminating the stock air box, you are now creating a "hot air box" meaning all the hot air under your hood gets sucked into the motor instead of what comes up from behind the headlight.

Also Cbatters did not duct tape his filter to show performance losses/gains. just fuel economy. I have yet to meet a steath/3000gt owner that did mods JUST to improve fuel economy. in fact, most go the opposite way.

If an intact is your only mod, you will probably not feel a difference. Save your money, gut the cats, and look for other mods that will give more performance for dollar.

but to answer your orginal question

The K&N intake set for the 3000gt is pretty much the same as the one for the eclipse, only it's got a smaller filter that fits better, and costs 100 bucks more. You also get a carb sticker, which is important for some of us.

The Ebay filters will fit, but typically also come with a CRAPTASTIC y-pipe that should be thrown out. the filters are usually not as good of quality, but will filter air to some degree, and may or may not fit any better than the cheaper k&n for the eclipses.

if your looking to go cheap, just get the k&n for the eclipse with the same mas as us.
