Ok, I'll reply to this one too. You will probably have to swap intake also I think the TB is on the driver's side on those motors. I think I could make a trip down there to help out. Maybe some of the skin will have grown back on my hands by then.

I believe there are also other things that do not work/would need to be fabricated.
like the accesories and mounting points/brackets/belts.
I thought the closest thing to a direct drop in came out of a kia SUV that was never made state side... (or was it a deawoo...)
I believe that john monnin's site tells you which engine to look for.

Aaron, in order for this swap to work, you need a JDM 3.5L engine out of a 91-94 vehicle. The montero engines don't work without modifications to the oil pump, alternator & PS bracket, and thermostat housing. You should definately look into getting those old heads resurfaced, cleaned, and redone with new guides and seals while you're at it. ...and there's nothing wrong with installing TT heads or porting your NA heads to be like TT heads.

Pajero engine is what I need for an easy swap.
I'm thinking that if there is a chance the galant 3.5L or some other cheap 3.5L could work that I would buy an engine to get it up here and take a look. If it looks impossible or like a major PITA then I'll put it up for sale on ebay and call it a day.
Getting brackets modified or a custom part here and there doesn't bother me too much.
I'm looking at a long term project here, not something that would be up and runnning in a week or two.

This is not necessarily an opinion, but if you're looking to go bigger, have you considered Ray's 3.7 ??
More than 1000 bucks, but well well worth it. Just food for thought.

If you need a block, heads let me know. I pulled this one about 2years ago been sitting in my garage ever since. Didn't have a spun bearing or anything, just dropped an 8:1 into my TT conversion.

Actually, you want the block out of a Montero SR (96-98). Or else you'll have to fab a lower intake plenum.
Unfortunately, there is no way, in this world or the next, that this will only cost you 1000 dollars all said and done. You're lucky to find a trashed out motor for that price, let alone all of the fabrication costs (oil pan, alternator, brackets, mounts, rerouting plumbing because of the higher engine placement). If you have access to the correct tools and parts, you're probably looking at closer to 2-3 grand and up, depending on your final goals.
