I came home from college and tried starting my car. The car would do nothing and none of the lights would work. I charged the battery over night and in the mourning I tried to start the car. The car cranked over very slowly but it did start. The car died right away though. I tried starting it again and the engine reved up, I didnt have my foot on the gas, and then it shut off. The engine also made a whiney noise, like it was the belts. I put a polished manifold on over winter and put egr block off plates on also. Could there be a problem with these or is there a problem with the battery? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hard to say. There comes a point where a battery becomes too old and can't hold a charge anymore. Another guess is maybe your alternator took a crap or the belt isn't turning it.

Sounds like either the Alternator took a crap as Greg said or the Battery just cannot take a charge from it anymore. Which would be why the car revved slowly after an overnite charge and only had enough for one start. I'd take the battery out and take it to a local auto parts store. Majority of them can check it in a few minutes. The whining might also be the Alternator working too hard to try and do soemthing(charge the batt) that it it just cant do(because it wont hold a charge).

Well today I took my old battery in and it was not good. So I bought a new battery. When I put the new one in and started the car, it cranked over much better but it still reved to 3000 rpm's and then died. It also still made that whiney noise. Does this mean that my alternator is bad too?

Did you have someone listen to where the whining was coming from?
Did you doublecheck all the places where the intake manifold seals with the motor and piping and egr? Its posible that the intake isnt 100% sealed and the air leaking out is causing the whine and not giving you enough pressure to run the car.
