Posting for a couple friends here that need some help... Car wants to move like it's in gear, but it's in neutral -- anyone have any ideas? Very unsafe gig here man. Mad Scientist? Linus? Tranny man?! Joseph? Krikey, I'm of no help... Best, SJ

I'm assuming we're talking about a manual tranny here. Does the tranny "shift" into neutral? Need more details...

Is this the one that "almost" made it to RA yesterday? If I recall correctly, he could move the shifter around - but car seemed like it was only in first gear. SJ, I only overheard part of that conversation... Is this the car in question?

Yeah it's my car, been super busy at work today so I was unable to post anything about it. Thanks to SJ for starting the discussion. Time for the post on what happened... I was cruising in 5th gear, about 60 mph down the highway. No shifting, no beating on her, just cruising. I felt a weird thud, kinda like a studder. It peaked my interest, then it happened again. I knew something was off then, so I down shifted to 3rd. From what I remember, it took the shift okay and the gear went in. I was coming to a turn so I shifted into 2nd, it took that okay then I started slowing down, clutch in. I put the car in neutral, and started coming to a stop. When I was at a complete stop (car in neutral mind you), the car snubbed. After repeatly starting it up and trying to shift, I was aware that I could no longer shift into 1st gear, nor any gear, but the car was stuck in 1st. The shifter however was in neutral. I limped the car 10 miles in 1st gear at 20mph, check engine light came on once, I assume due to heat, so I pulled over and placed my first phone call to brandon. I let the engine cool down, and continued my way. Now, by no means did I expect to keep driving in 1st gear, had I known I was another 20 miles away from RA I would have stopped. Google maps told me I was only 2 miles away, so I kept chugging. Eric finally met me in Kiel, and we tried to diagnose problems. I was able to get the car into reverse, there was a loud pop, the it started moving in reverse. I didnt like this so I shut it off. We were able to get it into random gears when the car was off, just shifting it, but it was an erratic pattern... Coming home, when I moved the car into the garage, I was able to get it into first, then it started moving slowly, however when I let the clutch out and moved in slower, the RPM"s shot up like I was in neutral, and I could barely get it moving. Thats the jist of things going on. I plan on draining the fluid to look for anything just to be safe, and also to check the level. I'll refill with redline after. Not sure when I'll get to this, incredibly busy as of late.

I'm willing to offer whatever small amount of assistance I can. I have the transmission manual pdf. Let me know if you need anything.

A Even though I think I have it memorized after this past weekend, I think I may need a copy of that.

Brett,
My .02 on the matter... Don't waste the money putting redline in - that thing needs to come out and be torn down. Sorry my friend, know you don't want to hear that...

Something is mechanically moving and blocking gears. The good news is the 5-speeds are smaller and lighter to remove... I have mixed feelings about redline transmission fluid. It's nice because it makes it easier to identify leaks. My car has it in, and when it's cold the transmission is definitely notchy. once it's warmed up, It is WAY smoother than normal transmission fluid. Good luck Brett. If your dropping it at your place, let me know, and I'll try to stop out with a few (12 or 24) of my freinds, and we'll help you feel better.

6-speed, 5-speed... whatever. They all go in the same way...
Brett, if you'd like my assistance pulling the tranny this weekend, give me ring or hit me up on AIM.
