Car come in. It has a couple issues. ABS light is on, tranny makes a rattling sound, and worst of all, the car is RWD.
Before I continue, I gotta say, these cars are kinda fun in RWD form with a RPS puck clutch. You can chirp the title without reving up the motor and it will do burnouts at least for a full block. The car is completely stock too!
At any rate, assuming I was going to do a tranny rebuild today, I drive the car into the shop and took off the passenger wheel. First thing I noticed is the small puddle of tranny fluid under the car. It appeared the axle had popped out of the tranny.
Further examining the axle, I noticed it was a remanned one and didn't have an ABS ring on the end. So I called up the owner and spoke with him. The last thing he did with the car was replace that axle.
Right then, I knew what the problem was. NON-turbo axle.
The 91s and 92 NAs for some reason Mitsu made different diffs in the trannies with a different spline cound than the turbos and 93+ NAs.
So the issue was, the NA axle has a different spline count than the diff in the tranny, so it wasn't spinning the axle. Now, our diffs are open in the front so all the power was going to the axle that wasn't turning in the diff thus the drivers axle wasn't getting power and the car became RWD.
$110 later, problem solved. No tranny rebuild today.
