I should have listened to this, mine took a crap on me today. Pretty much it doesn't put power to the wheels, and there is a grinding sound as the clutch engages. I'm gonna be pulling it on Sunday and I'll know the extent of the damage. How hard is the rebuild on a 5spd awd trans? I've done a few rebuilds before but I havn't done one on one of these. Also what would I need for specialty tools.

Eric: Love the hatchet hanging next to the trans in your picture. Is that on the list of 3s repair tools in the manual! SS

Adam: I'm not sure specifically what needs to be machined. I was told that by gatecrasher on 3SI, with no details only that it needed modification. Scott: You're god damn right its a necessary tool! You didn't see the hatchet marks on my bell housing? If it won't come nice.....its going to come off one way or another. I have used my extra free time to learn I am NOT a master fabricator. Apparently my gift for breaking things extends into the world of plexiglass.

If the 5 speed is anything like the 6 speed (and I'm sure it is) you won't need any specialty tools aside from a gear puller and a method of pressing things back on. The entire transmission comes apart via 10 & 12 mm bolts and a few pins that are hammered out via a hatchet.

I have a puller and my work has a press (I work at a Honda dealership) so that won't be a problem. How is it dificulty wise, I've seen people saying that these transaxles are some of the hardest ones to rebuild. I've done a few before but never one of these.

I really can't say 100%. This is my second foray into the internals of the transmission; first time I just installed the MR gears which is very simple and doesn't require taking anything off the shafts. This is my first attempt at doing any serious work on it. So far, it seems pretty straight forward, just a lot of small pieces that are easily lost....

Good luck guys. If you have any questions, Maddog on 3SI is really knowledgeable about the tranny internals.

Mine's a stripped output shaft, unfortunatly I think the reason it stripped out is because I have a chunk missing out of my bellhousing and the shaft is partially exposed, the shaft and TC spool were badly rusted. EDIT: pics TC spool damage Bellhousing damage

wow, thats nasty looking. reminds me of the donkey show in mexico.....I think they called that ghonna-sypha-herpa-chlap-arheya. You dont want to catch what your transmission has, trust me. I'm talking about bore-punching here kids. Not pretty.

Thank you for that, made me smile after an otherwise shit night of finding that and being bit by a spider while doing so.

Adam, I'm no longer sure that you and I are talking about the same kind of "trannys".
