So as everyone probably knows by now, I bought my Hallman Pro MBC from the infamous Brandon. It looks just like this one:



I was messin around with it last weekend. I was going to install it so I turned the cap to make sure boost was all the way down. Well the cap popped off. I noticed that inside is a shaft threaded from both sides; one to go into the body of the BC, the other threads into the cap. Am I right in assuming that this shaft should be threaded all the way into the cap so that when I turn it up, it should be pushing the shaft further into the body of the BC? Is that even supposed to pop off or is that a sign that it's broken?

Also, I don't know how to go about tuning the MBC to get my desired boost level. I have an Autometer boost gauge installed on the A pillar. Do I just start with it all the way down and drive around watching the gauge and turning it up in increments until when I mash the gas I get the boost level I want? Any help would be appreciated.

The way most boost manual boost controllers work is a simple ball and spring.

Springs have set rates of compression based on the force pushing on them. In this case, it is the force of the air pressing against the ball. Once it reaches the springs maximum amount of force it begins to deflect, letting air by to work your wastegates.

Obviously not every car wants to work on the same amount of boost, and switching springs out on every car would be a pain, so we have the screw. This adjusts the pre-tension on the spring, which adjusts the level of boost needed to open it.

I can't say for certain without seeing the boost controller, and not knowing the brand what the "top popping off" means, but if the threads are not stripped and the peices are all there, you should be able to put everything back together.

As far as setting it, yes, you are correct. you go to the lowest point, run your car, pull over, pop the hood, adjust the top, go drive, pull over, pop the hood, adjust, go drive, pull over... etc etc until desired pressure is reached.

Also remember that manual boost controllers can change boost levels slightly in different temps and what not, so you need to keep a slight eye on your boost gauge even after you have it set to your desired level. Not a big deal for the average person, but a big deal for someone running on the bitter edge of lean.
