So I went out to start the car last night, and play with a bit of wiring.
I started it up, and it made one hell of an intresting tick that I have never heard before. And I've heard alot of ticks on these cars over the years.
So I start putting my head around in the engine bay.
The tick sounds like it is coming from the timing belt.
Cool. I love new ticks.
So, I figure, not a big deal, the timing belt must be coming apart under the covers. So I pull the front cover off, where it seems the loudest. (engine still running.)
timing belt is running right in the middle of the gears. stop the engine. belt does not look frayed at all. seems a bit loose going around the water pump, but I believe it was always like that, and it's not "overly loose."
So I start examing the accesory belts. those don't look frayed at all. I see a loose wire going down to the crank angle sensor. AH HA! get that pressed back in, and make sure it's not rattling.
start the engine up, still makes the goofy noise. *explative deleted*
By then the girlfriend's friends started to show up for some gay candle party or cooking party or whatever gay crap women get together about as a disguise to discuss how to make their man's life more misserable.
So I had to escape out the side door.
Any ideas? anyone heard anything like this before?
Oh. once I saw the timing belt was not frayed I gave it a bit of gas, sometimes the ticking goes away as RPM goes up. but not everytime.

So let me get this straight. You replaced your water pump WITH your timing belt, so now your timing belt is acting as a water pump too, I gotta get that mod, save some money. But wait, you replaced your timing belt WITH Greg, so now Greg is filling in for your timing belt, that's impressive, is he like slave labor, and is that cheaper than doing the timing? Do you have any more Greg's available to replace my timing belt with? Is Greg better for your engine than the normal timing kit? This is a lot of great info, thanks! ttangel wrote: A923KGT wrote: G-ELL wrote: No, but you can take everything appart and inspect the blades for signs of them rubbing. exactly, as the bearings on the pump wear the impeller can start tick tick ticking like a time bomb. then it seizes up and your timing belt slips and boom, you rebuild your engine. if you haven't replaced your waterpump yet I would start with that... good luck! good news. the cool thing is, I know I posted that. the other cool thing is I have no idea when, or why, or what it says.
I'm pretty sure I meant to say I replaced my timing belt when I did the 120k with Greg. But that doesn't mean that in the year plus that I had the car apart, something couldn't have gotten into the water lines and worked its way up to the pump.
Or that me and Greg spent much of the time drunk when doing the T-belt... and anything could have been replaced with anything else...
so... yeah...
I killed a bottle of vodka. then gave it back to the toliet.

started the car up.
new sound was there and so loud lisa came out to ask "what the f*ck is that noise?"
I let it run for a bit while again poking around looking for it.
It got quieter for a bit. then went away for a bit. then came back.
what does a collapsed lifter sound like?
Seems to be comming from the water pumpish timing beltish area yet... or perhaps the heads/cam shaft right next to the timing belt. I took the timing belt cover off again. this time the belt was tight. as one would expect in with it stopping in different areas of TDC and what not right?
oil pressure is good. Temp seems to be fine. makes vacuum just fine. Less when I get on the gas, as normal.
So I guess what I'm saying is... I dunno.
