also off the headers is know as a downpipe. When you buy exhsust it usually come downpipe, high flow cat or straight pipe, and cat-back exhaust. Personaly i would say stick with the duals cause it looks alot more sexy.

I had a Borla exhaust on a 94 SL and have it on a TT now. Very happy with it.

Another option is a custom exhaust. I have a custom Magnaflow exhaust from Mufflers & Pipes in Waukesha and am very happy with it.

Just throwing my 2 cents in here. I got a Stillen down pipe and gutted the remaining precat, left the rest stock, and I couldn't be happier with the way my exhaust sounds. It's loudER but doesn't drone and isn't so loud to attract the wrong attention (popo & ricers). I've actually gotten quite a few compliments on the way it sounds.
Obviously, if you're looking for maximum performance you'll want to go bigger diameter. But I'm running stock turbos with just a bit more boost, so deleting the cats and a bigger downpipe opened it up enough for power gains.
If you don't have a lot of cash to spend, this might be the way to go. A Stillen or other quality downpipe can be had for well under $300 used.

My Dad still lives in Ohio. I love the sound, and received many compliments on the note at the UMG. It does not sound like a V8 if that's what you are after, but IMHO is deeper than most import exhaust notes, and fairly louder.

It just seemed to move the power up in the band.
